| 0:47.1 | expected. We're talking about the consumer price index. That measures what Americans pay for goods |
| 0:52.0 | and services. It rose 2.7% last month as compared to one |
| 0:56.3 | year earlier. But it did not change as compared to one month earlier. It helped that gas prices |
| 1:02.0 | went down, and overall the cost of goods did not go up as much as economists feared, meaning |
| 1:07.3 | a lot of businesses have not been passing on tariff costs to their customers, at least not yet. |
| 1:12.4 | But analysts also noted a pretty big hike in the cost of services, for example, health care, |
| 1:17.8 | haircuts, dry cleaning, and pet services. And at least some of them believe that's tied to |
| 1:22.4 | President Trump's immigration crackdown, since businesses in the services industry that have |
| 1:26.8 | been relying on immigrant labor |
| 1:28.3 | might have to raise pay to attract new workers. And those costs could be passed onto customers. |
| 1:34.0 | Meanwhile, there are concerns over the quality of the government's data, not just for inflation, |
| 1:38.2 | but also employment reports. Because of budget cuts, some data collection has been suspended. |
| 1:43.7 | Plus, the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics got fired earlier this month, |
| 1:47.8 | with President Trump saying jobs data had been rigged for political reasons. |
