Summary

In this episode, we meet Jenny, 42, who is ready for a serious relationship after many years of monogamy. But she feels very self-conscious about her body, so much so that it feels almost impossible to open up to new love. Jenny's last relationship ended in her late 20s, and ever since, she's thrown herself into work and tried to ignore both the deep desire for a romantic relationship, and the poor body image that has prevented her from finding it.

In her eating psychology coaching session, Jenny works with founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, Marc David. As Jenny shares, she's avoided dating out of fear that she'll be rejected, telling herself that she'll be better able to date once she's happier with her body.

As Marc reflects, so many of us assume that others hold the same judgments of ourselves and our bodies that we do. But very rarely is this actually the case.

Others usually observe what's good about us: the beauty in our curves, the special way we smile, or the twinkle in our eyes. As well as what makes us attractive on the inside … our kindness, caring, sense of humor, generosity, quirkiness, and so much more.

For all of us learning to love and accept ourselves (and hey, that's most of us!), this episode is for you.

Thank you for letting me come on. Yay. If you could wave your magic wand and have whatever you want is a student body. What would that be for you? Okay, so using the magic wand, I think my wish would be to be able to really open up fully in a romantic relationship and also in physical intimacy as well, without being preoccupied by my body and what it looks like.

1:09.4

I would say that would be my magic wish.

1:12.4

That's a great magic wish.

1:16.3

How long do you think that wish has been present for you?

1:21.2

Great question. I'm not sure that there's a time that it has ever not been present, certainly since my teenage years.

1:30.1

I would say some, yeah, it's been a wish that's been there in a really long time.

1:34.1

How old are you now?

1:35.9

42.

1:37.7

And when was the last time you were in relationship?

1:41.9

So I had a four-year relationship when I was in my 20s, and that was from the age of

1:48.2

23 to 27. And I haven't had a serious relationship since that time, so it's been about 15 years.

1:55.7

So in that 15 years, did you wish to be in a relationship, where you just sort of focused on other

things? Where was your head and heart at? I would say I was conflicted. It was, yeah, it's

2:14.7

quite difficult, the ending of my relationship when I was in my 20s.

2:18.5

And so I think for a period of time, I was just taking time to get over that and get to know myself again.
