Hello there, Chuck Todd, and this is the Chuck Todd Gas.

We are recording on July 27th, and overnight we learned that the Department of Justice

has been asking questions about former President Trump's actions leading up to January 6th.

Of course, questions does not mean criminal investigation.

The reporting confirmed by our Justice Correspondent Pete Williams is just the latest.

In a five-year-long saga of incremental news and investigative nuggets around the former

President, including everything from the Mueller investigations to impeachment, investigations

in New York and Georgia, fights over his tax returns, hotel leases, foreign gifts,

you name it.

So my guest today is the one and only Pete Williams.

This is his last week at NBC News.

He is retiring after a nearly three-decade run at what he calls the National Biscuit Company.

Go know where those biscuits are.

To give you a little bit of a sense of some of the memory lanes I want to travel down,

he got to start local news in Wyoming, came to DC as a press aide for a congressman by

the name of Dick Cheney.

Later he served as the Pentagon spokesperson during the Gulf War, first Gulf War during

President George H. W. Bush's administration.

And in 1993 he joined our network, covering the Department of Justice and the Supreme Court.

Over my time working with Pete, I've known him to be a thoughtful, careful, journalist,

a really funny guy that is very careful not to let some of that humor get in the way publicly,

which is all the more fun.
