you have ever done in your life? You would probably lead a miserable life filled with

nothing but regret and apologies.

The whole process would be pointless and without any learning from the past.

So what if that is your national identity, the identity of your nation being based on nothing but its horrible past?

What if your national identity is one of regrets rooted in the act of apologizing?

And all decisions are based on writing past. of as a kind of historic reckoning, a way to come to a resolution with a sordid past.

At least that seemed to be the hope in places like Germany,

but instead in practice something very different has taken place and it is a warning to all of us

who only focus on the worst of ourselves and the effect it has in our identity.
