And it was, of course, a couple of days ago that the numbers dropped

with regards to what the Office of National Statistics predicts the population will look like

by 2032. And the figure is arresting in the sense of size. Seventy-two million will be the overall

population.

I wonder at what point you can start chipping away

at the knee-jerk negative reaction to numbers like this.

For example, the PWC looked ahead to 2050 not long ago

and said that the main reason why Britain would remain a top 10 economy

is because of its growing population. Somewhere like Italy, meanwhile, would be long gone. Demographics
