Summary
On Monday, Bexar County Criminal District Judge Ron Rangel sentenced Martin Garcia to 45 years in a state correctional facility for the 2023 killing of 66-year-old Teresa Moreno Garcia, court records show. Garcia, who had already served 454 days in jail, reached a plea deal with the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, agreeing to a maximum sentence in exchange for a no-contest plea to one count of murder.
During the sentencing hearing, Teresa Garcia’s sons delivered emotional victim impact statements, describing their mother as a loving woman who endured years of domestic abuse at the hands of her ex-husband.
“She did not know how to escape,” one of her sons said.
The victim’s other son recalled Martin Garcia’s controlling nature, stating, “He would say things like, ‘If I can’t have her, nobody can.’” He urged others to listen to victims of domestic violence, saying the family had known for decades that Garcia was abusive.
Prosecutors revealed that although the couple had divorced years earlier, they continued to live together due to financial struggles. However, when Teresa Garcia told her ex-husband that she was moving out to be with someone new, he “violently attacked her.”
On the night of December 5, 2023, at approximately 11 p.m., officers with the San Antonio Police Department responded to a 911 call from a residence on the 200 block of Channing Avenue. Martin Garcia himself had placed the call, confessing to the dispatcher that he had just killed his wife by stabbing her to death.
When officers arrived, they found Teresa Garcia inside the home with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities also discovered Martin Garcia outside the residence, suffering from a self-inflicted wrist wound. He was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation before being taken into custody.
According to the arrest report, Garcia told investigators he attacked his ex-wife after accusing her of cheating. The argument escalated when Teresa Garcia attempted to leave, prompting him to stab her repeatedly.
Despite his horrific actions, Garcia expressed remorse in court. “I loved her very much,” he told the judge. “She was the only one I loved. I did what I did, I am very sorry, but I loved her.”
An autopsy by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Teresa Garcia’s cause of death as multiple sharp force injuries, ruling it a homicide.
