I'll talk about that. Pennsylvania's problem for a time was, well, Maryland.

It's King Charles I, before his untimely death, who placed the Maryland border at 40 degrees north latitude.

The land was granted to Lord Calvert, who founded a Catholic settlement, St. Mary's City, to the south. The rest of Maryland was

unsettled mostly by European settlers and still had the status when the colony of Pennsylvania

was founded. Charles II, the son of the deposed king, rewarded his good friend William Penn

with a Pennsylvania colony in 1681.

Penn was a Quaker.

The colony became popular with them.
