Summary

In this episode of Skin Anarchy’s Fragrance Friday, host Dr. Ekta sits down with Matthew J. Sánchez, the award-winning perfumer and founder of MATTEO PARFUMS®, to explore his bold journey from the world of finance to the art of fragrance. What began as a career in banking took a transformative turn when Matthew discovered the power of scent as a storytelling medium—and a path to reclaiming cultural identity and creative purpose.

The episode dives into the inspiration behind his debut fragrance, Celadawn—a deeply personal blend that pays homage to his West African, Mexican, and Mediterranean roots. With a groundbreaking horchata-amber accord and rich notes of vanilla, blood orange, and African resins, Celadawn captures memory, belonging, and warmth in a bottle. Matthew shares how the fragrance became an autobiographical work, earning acclaim and an industry award nomination.

His second release, Lover’s Dew, continues the theme of cultural reverence—reimagining fine fragrance through the lens of ancient Aztec and Mayan traditions. With ingredients like juniper berry, prickly pear, and marine accords, this aquatic fougère nods to ritual, luxury, and legacy.

More than scent, this conversation explores intention, artistry, and identity. Matthew offers insights into the emotional language of fragrance, the importance of representation in perfumery, and the harmony between creativity and structure. Whether you’re a fragrance lover or creative thinker, this episode is a reminder that sometimes the most powerful stories are the ones we wear.

0:18.5

Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited. Yeah, no, I'm excited.

0:22.6

Geez, I can't wait to talk to you and learn from you actually, because, I mean, like I said,

0:27.2

you know, you really are so, so gifted in what you do and what you create, you know. The fragrances

0:33.4

that I've experienced, you know, Soledon and lovers do have just been breathtaking and they're so

0:39.1

beautiful. So I can't wait to dive into that, Matt, but I want to learn about you. Can you tell us

0:43.4

about where everything started for you with fragrance? Like, when did you know that you wanted to go

0:48.0

into this? It was like a career and all the good stuff. Yeah. Well, first and foremost, thanks for

0:53.2

the wonderful words. I'm like smiling and blushing

0:56.8

it means a lot um especially since i'm not what many would call classically trained right um you go through

1:04.3

a lot of trial and error and um a lot of what is the word imposter syndrome right in just dealing with your own creative blocks.

1:12.3

So it is pretty cool to hear such kind words coming from people like you in the market and the audience in the world when they do appreciate something you put out into the wild.

1:22.3

To answer your question, I actually didn't know perfumery was even a career option or a choice, which sounds

1:30.5

silly and naive. But my family background, you know, they really stressed education and more

1:36.5

formal types of career titles we all may be familiar with, right? So things like, you know,

1:42.7

pursuing becoming a doctor or a lawyer or, you know, a policeman or firefighter, right? So things like, you know, pursuing becoming a doctor or a lawyer or, you know,

1:46.4

a policeman or firefight, right? Like those types of titles we hear all the time. And that's

1:52.3

pretty much the route I was kind of pursuing when I started. That was out in the D.C. area,

1:57.2

starting my career in banking and really was just not too thrilled with it.

2:03.6

It's not a job for me.

2:05.6

And I'm very left brain, very right brain.

2:07.6

I love when I can mix, like use my whole brain, I'll say.
