1968, John Lewis was with presidential candidate Bobby Kennedy as he campaigned in Indianapolis.

It was there that he learned that his friend and mentor, Dr Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated.

In this very special episode of Cape Up,

Lewis tells me why he's going back there

for the first time since that fateful day

and why he's avoided returning at all.

This will be my very, very first time

going back to Indianapolis.

I have not going back to that spot since.

It's just been too hard, too difficult.

So, April 4, 1968, where were you?

On April 4th, 1968, I was in Indianapolis, Indiana, campaigning for Robert Kennedy,

happened to organize a rally where he was supposed to speak.

And as people may or may not know,

at that rally that night Bobby Kennedy informed the people who were there

I think around his car about the news about what happened to Dr. Martin Luther King.
