Hey there from CNN. I'm Krista Bo with the five things you need to know for Wednesday, August

Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said today, European leaders discussing security guarantees for Ukraine without Moscow is a path to nowhere.

For the time being, we are only seeing a fairly aggressive escalation of the situation,

rather clumsy and unethical attempts to change

the position of the Trump administration and of the President of the United States himself,

which we observed when the Europeans escorted Mr. Zelensky to Washington on Monday this week.

We did not hear any constructive ideas from the Europeans there.

But Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy praised those efforts this morning, as plans are

underway for a face-to-face meeting between Ukraine and Russia's leaders in the coming weeks.

That's what the White House says at least, with three officials telling CNN, Budapest and

Switzerland are some of the venues being considered as of now.

But the Kremlin hasn't really publicly signed on to the bilateral

meeting just yet, with Lavrov saying President Vladimir Putin supports sending more senior
