Late in the evening, 8 May 1945, the Germans signed a surrender document that takes place in effect 23 or 1 hours central European time.

That begins a contest, a memory that is with us today, the Victory Day Parade and celebration on May 9th in the Soviet Union, now the Russian Federation.

I go there thanks to the hosting of George Friedman, the founder and chairman of geopolitical features,

because what we're looking at here is how the Russian people today, the generations after generation since that event,

regard the success of the Soviet Union, the Russian people, and why today they look completely profoundly differently at the conflict in Ukraine, then does the United States.

George, a very good evening to you, Victory Day. What did it represent then to the 16 republics of the Soviet Union?

What does it represent now in the 21st century? Good day to you.

Good day. And what it represented was the end of a nightmare.

The Russian, the German invasion of the Soviet Union,

killed countless people well above a million, and now is done, and now life could be beginning in.

And what it means right now is a remembrance of a time when the Soviet Union was triumphant, when the Soviet Union was something to clearly respect,

and above all else, it regards itself as the victor in World War II, you know, as the Americans gave, less, less, they know that the British, but they faced Hitler and defeated him.

And that remains an important thing.

Your father, Hungarian, participated in the war, however he participated in a fashion when both sides, the Russian, the Soviet side, and the German side were a threat to him.
