Summary

Hubert Butler (1900-1991) is a forgotten Irish hero. In 1938-39 he traveled to the Nazi Third Reich to help Jews escape persecution. While he ultimately helped save 150 people from the holocaust, he was not celebrated in Ireland. Instead after he revealed how the church was involved in supporting the Nazi allies in Yugoslavia he suffered what was in effect internal exile. Listen to Hubert's fascinating story in this podcast.

1:07.0	The Nazis had expanded what they called the Third Reich by amalgamating Germany and Austria before they went on to seize the

1:18.6	Nevertheless, most still hoped, even prayed that there could be peace in Europe. Understandably, few wanted another
1:25.8	World War. In September 1938, the eyes of the world focused on a meeting between
1:31.8	Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister and Adolf Hitler, the German
1:35.8	Chancellor in Munich in Germany.
1:39.0	Surprisingly, the outcome seemed positive, so much so that Chamberlain arrived back to cheering crowds in England
1:45.3	and famously claimed that he had secured peace for our time.
1:50.0	While war still broke out less than 12 months later in 1939, there were those for whom the horrors of war
1:56.0	had already begun.
1:57.8	Indeed, only five weeks after Hitler met Chamberlain in Munich in 1938, the Nazis unleashed a wholesale attack on Jewish communities within
2:06.1	their borders. On November the 1910th, 1938, Jewish-owned shops and businesses were attacked. Synagogues were burned to the ground and around 100 Jews were killed while 30,000 were arrested and taken to concentration camps.
