Summary

This week’s podcast is one of the biggest eye-openers I have ever done. Not only did I learn a lot, I have actually changed my views on a number of topics, including the effects of the moon on fishing and the effects of a change in barometric pressure. My guest, Russ Carpenter, is a neurologist at Stanford who studies the brains and senses of fish, specifically rainbow trout. He answers lots of question about a trout’s sense of smell, vision, and hearing. Including UV vision. I hope you learn as much as I did in this podcast. In the Fly Box this week, we have these questions: Do you really fish with bamboo rods? Aren’t graphite and glass better? Why did I see large steelhead in a Great Lakes tributary in July? What is your opinion on stocking fish in wild trout streams? Is a 6-weight line from 30 years ago the same size as a modern 6-weight?Can I dye a fly line with RIT dye? What is the best saltwater weed guard? Are some spooky fish truly un-catchable? Is there anything I can do to try to catch them? Is there a difference between a Scottish brown trout and a German brown? I am landing trout up to 20 inches without letting them run. Am I doing something wrong? What do you think about weighted soft hackles? With modern runner soles like the Michelin sole on the Pro Boot, is there any need for studs?

Hi and welcome to the Orvis Fly Fishing Guide podcast. A little bit later in the show we're going to be talking to Dr. Russ Carpenter who is a neurobiologist who specializes in the neurobiology of fishes and specifically rainbow trout.

So this is going to be, I think, an interesting podcast for you

0:32.1

because we're going to talk about lots of questions

0:34.8

that I get. Fish hearing, fish vision, fish sense of smell, the effect of the moon and the sun and barometric pressure on trout and I have to

0:49.9

tell you that I learned so much on this podcast interview and it's changed the way

0:57.5

already changed the way I think of certain things and it changed my opinion on some things in relation to the effects of

1:07.1

of weather and other conditions on on fishing so I think you're going to enjoy it. I know I did and I'm excited to bring this

1:16.1

podcast to you. But first let me try to answer some questions. Let's go into the flybox and you can send questions in the flybox. You can send me an email or a voicemail

362 8800. So I'd love to hear your questions and I'm running a little low on good

1:47.1

questions so the best questions are simple questions, problem-solving questions, not really open ending questions like how do I

1:56.5

avoid drag, but questions where you've had a situation where things didn't work out quite right and you want some suggestions on how to make it better.

2:07.8

So anyway, that's what I'm here for to help make your fishing more fun.

2:13.0

Hey, Tom, this is Paul calling from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

2:17.0

I'm calling, I got a couple of questions.

2:21.0

The first one being, I'd like you to talk about weather and overcast versus

2:26.9

sunny. How does that affect trout in their feeding behavior, rain, everything like that. The second question is, I guess, just general expectations.

2:41.6

You know, I see all these videos of people going out, it seems like they're catching trout after trout.

2:47.0

What would you say is a reasonable expectation to have.

2:53.0

Obviously there's a lot of variables in play,

2:54.9

but, you know, if we're going four hours

2:59.4

without catching a fish, is that normal? So, Paul, I don't think there is ever a reasonable expectation when you go fishing, any kind of fishing.
