It's an exciting but daunting prospect when you set foot in a brand new office--there's room to grow, along with plenty of opportunities to embarrass yourself. We talk with Adrian Granzella Larssen, editor-in-chief of The Muse, to learn the dos and don'ts of starting a new job. Hello and welcome to The Upgrade, a podcast from the team at lifehacker.com, where we help you improve your life one week at a time.

0:22.0

Before we get started this week, I should probably introduce myself. I'm Melissa Kirsch,

0:26.6

and I'm the new editor-in-chief of Lifehacker. I'm super excited about that, and to be here hosting

0:31.3

the upgrade along with Lifehacker editor Andy Orrin, whom, of course, you already know.

0:36.1

Yes. Hello, everyone. So what are we talking about this week? Well, as a matter of fact,

0:42.1

since it is your first week on the job, perhaps we should talk about that, talk about starting

0:47.6

new jobs. I can't think of anything that I would like to talk about more. Because it's not easy.

1:02.5

what the ideal job would be for you.

1:04.7

And then you get the job and, you know, you go through this whole interview process, which

1:08.7

can be kind of nerve-wracking.

1:10.0

You get the job. And then suddenly you actually have to show up and perform. And nobody is like sitting down with you and telling you all about like nobody's selling you on the job anymore. Now that you have the job, you're there and you actually have to do it. And so suddenly like what was like a really exciting process becomes something major that you actually have to do it. And so suddenly, like, what was like a really exciting process

1:27.6

becomes something major that you actually have to accomplish. Or it's like getting an acceptance

1:32.8

letter from the college of your dreams, and then, but then you have to actually go and do the work.

1:37.5

Right. Or getting a dog and then you actually have to walk it. Yeah, yeah. And you have to

1:43.1

pick up and scoop all the dog things.

1:45.8

Because work is work.

1:47.1

And it's not necessarily an exciting or, well, it is exciting, but it's not necessarily

1:52.6

a fun thing working.

1:56.4

Not all the time.
