Summary
How to spot danger before a mass shooting: real stories and practical situational awareness you can use anywhere.
Dr. Phil breaks down how to spot early warning signs before violence erupts, at the mall, on campus, at the beach, anywhere you live life. Using real cases from a Black Friday shooting in San Jose, the Bondi Beach Hanukkah attack, and the Brown University lockdown, he explains baselines vs anomalies, crowd behavior shifts, and why your gut often knows first. You’ll learn simple situational awareness habits, what “run, hide, fight” really looks like in the real world, how to talk to your kids without scaring them, and what to do if you see threatening behavior online or in person.

| 0:00.0 | I'm here to talk to you today about something I wish we didn't have to talk about, but we do. |
| 0:14.0 | That's the reality of mass shootings and something that I think is going to make you feel less helpless that these things occur |
| 0:26.3 | and less helpless if you are unfortunate enough to be in that kind of situation |
| 0:30.4 | because I want to talk to you about situations, specifically situational awareness |
| 0:37.0 | and what it really is because it can make the difference |
| 0:41.2 | as to whether or not you come out of the situation or whether you don't. |
| 0:47.7 | Now, first, I don't want to do anything to trivialize, play down, or in any fashion minimize the tragedy of these situations. |
| 0:59.5 | But by the same time, I don't want to sensationalize, dramatize, or overstate them. |
| 1:05.7 | And we need to be aware of just how common these mass shootings really are. So I want to take a look historically |
| 1:16.2 | at how much exposure you have and what the risk really is, because they don't happen as much |
| 1:26.6 | as much as they seem. And it seems like they're happening |
| 1:29.9 | more than they used to, and they are. But they're also getting a lot more coverage because we have |
| 1:36.7 | the Internet right now. And that means that we've got around the clock coverage. We don't have a |
| 1:42.8 | 24-hour news cycle. We have a 24-hour news cycle. |
| 1:44.9 | We have a 30-minute news cycle, sometimes even shorter than that. |
| 1:48.9 | And so these things do get a tremendous amount of coverage where they didn't in the past. |
| 1:53.1 | But let's look historically at how often these things do happen. |
| 1:58.1 | And when I say mass shootings, the Violence project, a group for whom I have a tremendous |
| 2:03.7 | amount of respect, define a mass shooting as four people killed in a public place, and it's not |
| 2:10.7 | primarily domestic. It's not a domestic violence situation, or it's not criminal, meaning that it's gang or drug-related. |
| 2:20.4 | They're talking about things outside of that definition. |
| 2:24.5 | And between 1966 and now, this is when they've started keeping that kind of a record, |
