Summary

"I think the trap we fall into is we try to pay God back, like 'I screwed up God, but I can make it right.'" How do you make it right with God? What can do you do to set things straight? When we mess up, it's instinctive to want to fix things. We made the mess, so we'll make it right again. That's what we do with our friends and family and coworkers. It's what we do with anyone any time we make a mistake. But God isn't anyone, and sin isn't just an accident. Welcome to Tim Minut Bible Talks, where we connect the Bible to your life and the time it takes to get to work.

I'm Keith Simon.

0:11.0

And I'm Patrick Miller. Right now we're working through the story of David's life in first and second Samuel

0:19.0

Today we're in second Samuel chapter 12 and we're to wrestle with a really practical question and

0:25.0

that is how do you respond when you become aware of sin in your life and I say

0:31.4

it's practical because every day we become aware of sin. It might be through

0:36.7

another person or through a set of circumstances or just our own conscience convicting us. But

0:42.1

we become aware of sin and then we have to

0:44.0

respond in some way. And if you're like me, my first response is not usually my

0:50.3

best response. Because one of my first responses is just to deny things. Well, I

0:55.5

didn't do that. That's not what I said. You misunderstood. Or to excuse it. You know,

1:01.0

my allergies were bad. I was tired. The kids were up all night. It was a

1:04.3

stressful day at work. In other words, I'm not accountable for what I did because I've got a

1:09.0

good excuse or to hide it, hide my sin.

1:12.6

And I remember when I was a kid I spilled Kool-Aid on a cushion, a seat cushion in one of my mom's

1:18.8

chairs and what I did is I just turned the cushion over and I hope that she would never find out.

1:24.6

Or I would just ignore my sin. You know life goes on and I'll just ignore it and

1:30.8

hopefully it'll be okay. Now the Bible says that when we become aware of

1:35.9

sin the right response is to repent of it. Now repent is a big biblical important word and we can't dive into the whole thing today

1:47.1

but it means to turn around to change one's direction. So to repent of sin is to turn from sin. And the first thing you do to turn from sin is just to admit it, confess it, be honest about it. You might remember that when Saul

2:06.0

sinned back in 1st Samuel 15, he did all the things that we do. He denied that he

2:12.1

sin, he blame shifted, you know, kind of blamed other people for it, he rationalized, he justified, he kind of admitted that he sinned finally, but in a way that was less than forthright and seemed like he was
