Summary

I'm reminded of the old Southwest Airlines commercials: "wanna get away?" Given the events of recent days, I'm guessing many of you are beginning to contemplate the possibility that living in the US long-term is becoming less and less of a viable plan. But if you've lived all your life in the US, the transition to expat life is probably a great big black box, full of questions and hurdles and potential dangers. Where do you start? Do I have to renounce my American citizenship? How much does a foreign passport cost? Is the taxation situation for an expat prohibitive for anyone but the very wealthy? What if I want more than one foreign passport? Can I just live in another country without being a citizen? What rights do I have as a resident of a foreign country? That's just barely scratching the surface. Fortunately, we're talking to a guy today who has made it his life's purpose to help other people answer all of these questions so that they can enjoy the great benefits of expat life. Mikkel Thorup is the number one best selling author of Expat Secrets: How To Pay Zero Taxes, Live Overseas and Make Giant Piles of Money. He hosts the popular podcast The Expat Money Show on iTunes and Stitcher Radio, and is the Director at EscapeArtist.com, the world's oldest offshore website. He has traveled to more than 100 countries, including North Korea, Zimbabwe, El Salvador, and Iran. He's lived overseas in 8 countries and has circumnavigated the globe more than 400 times. Never in our history have we been so close to a world

where we can live truly free and independent lives.

But here's a thing.

0:21.9

There are those with money, power, and influence who would rather see

0:25.8

you dependent on them and the system they created, a system designed to keep you comfortable,

0:31.2

apathetic, and distracted.

0:34.0

We believe the road to true independence doesn't come through political elections or senseless regulation,

0:39.4

but rather in maximizing the empowerment of the individual.

0:44.1

If you feel the same way, then get ready.

Welcome to wealth, power, and influence.

Oh, welcome back, everybody. and of talking about politics then we're going to do a deviation from that today and I'm going we're going to talk a little bit about how do you get out of here if that's your goal

1:10.0

and so we on this show I've been a big proponent over the last couple of years of doing a few things first is controlling the source of your income or I guess increasing your human capital would be first if you need some specialized skills some sort of knowledge that's going to give you an

1:23.5

advantage in the market got to keep those skills up to date then we need to

1:27.3

control the source of our income that means ownership in whatever it is that you do.

1:34.0

And then finally, last but not least, is as best we can,

1:36.7

we need to try and make that income mobile.

1:38.7

Because if we have a great amount of income, greater than what we need to expend in order to live, and we can make

1:47.0

that income from anywhere on earth, we become wildly more free than we are if we just have a high income or even a lot of money in the

bank and so one of the best ways for us to create the kind of life that we want to have is to first and foremost get out there

and have the income that is required in order to make it work and then finally once
