Summary

Joey is a young creative living in Australia who can’t decide which hat to wear. Should it be songwriting, skateboarding, acting, or should he focus more on his day job as a retail clerk? Fitting everything in during the week seems impossible and he feels guilty when he can’t cross everything off his checklist. On this episode of How To!, co-host Amanda Ripley brings in journalist Oliver Burkeman, the author of 4000 Weeks: Time Management for Mortals. He explains how he too once wanted to do it all, but eventually realized that it’s just not feasible. As Joey learns, letting go of some things and focusing on what really matters can actually lead to the ‘joy of missing out.’ If you liked this episode, check out: “How To Never Miss a Deadline” Do you wonder how best to use your time? So I work in retail. I've had this job for about four years as just like a, we call it a

A checkout chick? Is that what you said?

0:15.0

Yeah, that's the colloquialism here.

Oliver, is this a Britishism? I think this is one of the many uniquely

Australian ways of talking about the world.

Welcome to how to. I'm Amanda Ripley.

It's safe to say most of us struggle to find time for everything we want and need to do, right?

0:41.4

Whether you're a checkout clerk, a skater, a teacher, a parent, it's the same problem. This week's

0:46.9

listener has big dreams and not enough hours in the day. My name is Joey. I'm 25 years old.

0:57.7

I'm an aspiring creative. I live in Australia.

1:08.0

I aspire to be a writer, skater, musician, performer. It's an impressive list. And as you can probably guess, Joey's having some difficulty making time for all of these

1:12.6

interests. There's so many things that I want to practice and, you know, have like a weekly

1:19.6

schedule of like, oh, today is this thing, I can do this, but I've always been someone who's

1:25.4

struggled intensely with structure and expectations.

1:30.3

And I'm finding that now that I'm having all these ambitions,

1:34.3

needs structures and repetition.

1:36.3

Yes, you and everyone else, which is why we're so glad that you reached out to us.

1:41.3

But what's funny is you say you're an aspiring creative, but it sounds like you're already a creative creative. Yeah, I acted the other day for the first time,

1:49.0

which was amazing. My first, uh, theater production ever, uh, it was a midsummer night's dream.

1:55.6

It was terrifying, but great. Well, congratulations on your first big show. What did you,

2:00.8

what role did you play? I played, uh, Demetrius, congratulations on your first big show. What role did you play?
