My name is Laura Diaz. It's really nice to have you here for today's very timely current events

conversation. There has been an unbelievable amount of activity online on social media in the

traditional print media opposing the Willow Project. The Willow Project is a new oil pipeline

proposed by Conoco Phillips. That is a drilling venture on Alaska's

North Slope. The benefits, of course, outlined by Conoco Phillips is that a Willow pipeline would

create jobs and it would boost domestic energy production. Conoco Phillips is saying that the project

could actually produce up to 180,000 barrels

of oil a day, which is about 1.5% of total U.S. oil production.

The proposed site for the Willow project is on federal land.

It is within the National Petroleum Reserve, which is a protected area in Alaska.

It is a 23 million acre area.

And of course, a lot of the public outcry is about the environment surrounding the proposed

willow project, the animals that will be affected, the indigenous communities that will be

impacted.
