Now I think there are three things going on in these elections. One way, positive, two rather more concerning. Let me talk you through them quickly.

The good piece of news is that the far right

populists of the alternative for Germany

have stagnated.

They are likely to get around 10% of the vote,

which is too much for comfort but after winning a significant

amount of votes increasing the vote at every election since their founding

they are for the first time likely to decline slightly in popular support.
