Hi, this is Kevin Don the Get Fit Guy.

0:07.3

And this week, I want to continue on the topic of using fitness to hedge against the aging process.

0:13.5

As I mentioned last week, there are several hallmarks of aging.

0:17.2

One of the main things we see is sarcopenia, which means death of the flesh in Latin,

0:23.4

and relates to the loss of muscle mass that we see as we age.

0:27.3

We know that muscle mass can be dramatically increased by resistance training.

0:32.2

In other words, we can effectively hedge against muscle loss through exercise.

0:37.4

Another question that often comes my way is,

0:39.9

how much protein do I need to build muscle or help retain muscle?

0:43.4

Which is a great question because we know that protein is a key component in muscle building.

0:48.0

1:16.6

She is quite telling. Even the ancient Greeks knew the value of protein to the body.

1:21.6

The proteins are a macronutrient, which is a group also containing carbohydrates and fats, and they're made up

1:28.6

of smaller building blocks called amino acids. There are 21 standard amino acids, and most

1:35.1

microorganisms and plants possess enzymes that enable them to synthesize these amino acids.

1:42.0

But animals, including humans, do not have these enzymes and therefore need to consume these amino acids. The animals, including humans, do not have these enzymes,

1:46.0

and therefore need to consume these amino acids in their diet. The amino acids, which we need to

1:51.9

consume, are referred to as the essential amino acids. And there are nine essential amino acids.
