Had a number of requests lately from people who want to know how many fly rods does a person really need how many

do I need do I really need to go to that one weight rod do I absolutely have to

have a 12 weight rod do I need a 6 and a half foot rod for small stream fishing?

And things like I have a bass rod. Can I use that for steelhead? So how many rods do you need?

Of course, it's easy for me to say

because we have a great loner program at Orvis.

I can borrow any rod in the Orvis line

for a day or for a week. We have a wonderful program where you can borrow

rods and reels and lines for employees. So we have access to any rod in the Or Orvis line and we of course play around with as many different rounds that we can but you have to buy them and and I know that that some people really are looking for an excuse to buy a new fly rod.

We all love our toys and some of you are always looking for an excuse to buy a new rod.

Some of you can't afford it and want to be able to get away with one rod for

various purposes. So I'm going to try to give you a little guidance on how many rods you

really need and maybe give you some excuses for buying a new rod if that's what you want.

I mean, after all, my job is to sell fishing tackle, but I want to be honest with you, the last thing I want to do is to try to sell you a rod that you don't really need or you can't afford.

So bear that in mind as we're talking about fly rod choice. So point number one is there is no all-around rod. You know

the the clicheted analogy is is would you want to play 18 hosa golf with one club and that's a pretty good analogy.
