What is up everyone? Today we are going to talk about how long succulents actually live.

It's a question that I don't think we've considered too much because most of us, let's just be honest here, most of us kill our succulents before they even

have a chance to die of old age. I can't tell you how many times I've heard from people that the

direct quote is I can't even keep a succulent alive.

So we're going to go over that, but we're also going to discuss some interesting facts

and figures about succulents.

It's hard to answer this directly because succulents aren't a category of

plants like cacti or ivies or anything like that.

succulents are a quality that plants have. So any type of plant could be

succulent so long as it has succulent quality. So that's why it's hard to say, oh, this is exactly how

long succulents live because you kind of have to go species by species.

But here are some general rules of thumb.

Something like a jade plant.

Jade plants can live for 70 to 100 years, which is crazy. Hens and chicks, very popular

succulent three years or so. Aloe vera, anywhere from five to 25 years, barrel cacti, those can live for centuries.

There are ones that are hundreds and hundreds of years old.

The living stones, lithops, those can be 40 to 50 years

and Christmas cactus, one that we've talked about a little bit recently, 30 plus years.

I actually recently saw a picture of one that was 50 years old, handed down from grandparents

to parents to then the current child is the owner. So three generations have

had that Christmas cactus. Some succulent plants have factors at play that can drastically

affect how long they live.
