We can use food, toys, or activities our dogs love, like swimming or running, as rewards in dog training. To get an unbelievable transfer of value from that reinforcement, we can use words that tell our dogs what they are doing is correct, how they will be reinforced and where that reinforcement will be. We’re covering Location Specific Reinforcement Markers and how to use them. It’s possible for everyone to double the value of rewards and grow their dog’s understanding when there is clarity about the specifics of release cues.

In the episode you'll hear:

• How my dog would leave position on a click when I first learned about clicker training.
• That I learned to mark for position and reward for behavior from Bob and Marian Bailey.
• How I started using Location Specific Reinforcement Markers in the mid-nineties with Buzz for his start line.
• How to use activities for location specific reinforcement in dog training.
• About the nuances of using “search”, “get it”, “bring me” and “break” as release cues and when I use “wit wit”.
• How I use different toys and names for those toys for training directionals like left and right for agility.
• In the episode, you’ll hear Why the tone of your words is vital for your dog’s clarity and that each should have unique sounds.
• An exercise you can do to try out Location Specific Reinforcement Markers in your training.
• That we can have many release cues and permissions as Location Specific Reinforcement Markers.

I remember in the early 1990s when I first learned about clicker training, I was practicing

0:05.9

out-of-sight stays in an obedience hall with other competitors. We were in a closet to tell you the

0:11.6

truth. I clicked my clicker to mark for my dog. She was correct because I had a mirror.

0:16.5

I could see she was. And then she came running in. Because I click my clicker, the behavior is over,

0:22.2

right? I reinforce her. And as I'm walking back to position, I'm thinking, something doesn't feel right.

Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog. That was my earliest experiences with

0:43.6

using a clicker. And I wasn't necessarily wrong. However, training of behavior that is stationary

0:50.3

is going to take a lot longer to grow that dog's understanding. It wasn't until probably

0:58.1

10 years later when I really started working with Bob and Mary and Bailey that I heard the

1:02.4

phrase that you want to mark for position and reward for behavior. And that's led me to the topic

1:10.0

of today's podcast. Now, I'm going to be completely

1:13.1

honest with you. I was intending on doing part three of our distance series today and I realized

1:19.4

there was a big gap that I had to fill in. And that is the topic of today's podcast,

1:26.2

which is location-specific reinforcer markers.

1:30.6

It's a big long title. And honestly, I was using it long before I had ever heard that phrase.

1:37.8

And honestly, it's something that I'd been using quite a while until somebody said,

1:41.7

hey, the protection world has started doing what you're

1:44.8

doing and they're calling it location specific reinforcer markers. I'm like, well, that sounds

1:50.1

like a really cool title. Whoever came up with that one, what they are. They are words that

1:56.9

tell my dog, you are right, but, or qualifying what's going to happen after. So, it's not a

2:05.9

but as much as an and. Stick with me on this one. So going back to that dog that I was reinforcing

2:13.5

with the mark from the closet, she was getting information that what she was doing
