overtaken by news rather quickly. And that's what happened last month on May the 6th, when I had a long

discussion with Shivshankar Menin, one of India's most influential strategic thinkers and a former

national security advisor. We were discussing whether India and Pakistan might go to war. And of course,

just a few hours later, they did. Loud explosions fill the sky in the early hours of the morning in Pakistan's

controlled territory of Kashmir. The two sides fought a sharp and short conflict that was

defined by the use of high-end drones and fighter jets. The whole thing wrapped in just a few

days, with both sides finding ways to either claim

victory or a moral high ground. Much of what Menon and I discussed, as I said, was instantly

dated. But there was a portion of that discussion that contained a bigger picture view of how

New Delhi sees the world. I hardly need to explain this to an FP live audience,

but India is growing in influence with each passing year. It is, depending on which index you look

at, either the fourth or fifth biggest economy in the world. It has the world's largest population.
