Summary

We're dropping in an episode of Dave DeSteno's podcast How God Works that explores the profound connection between craft and spirituality. Dave examines why making things with our hands can put us in a transformative state called "flow" - where time disappears, worries fade and we lose ourselves in he work. Through conversations with a Tibetan monk who creates intricate sand mandalas, a Native American glass artist and the former director of Maine's renowned Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, this episode reveals how the simple act of shaping materials can shape us in return. It's about finding meaning in the dialogue between maker and medium and discovering that sometimes the most sacred moments happen when our hands are busy and our minds are still. Enjoy! We're dropping an episode of my friend Dave Dostano's podcast, How God Works, into our feed this week.

0:15.3

You may have heard Dave on my pod. He interviewed me and Jenny Wallace about making and mattering. And the episode Dave has

0:24.0

given us for our listeners is called The Flow of Craft. So you can imagine I was especially

0:30.7

interested to listen to this discussion about craft and spirituality. Enjoy.

0:41.1

I'll admit it.

0:43.6

I have no artistic skills.

0:45.1

I can't draw.

0:46.2

I can't paint.

I can't even build interesting things with blocks.

So for most of my life,

0:53.0

I've strenuously avoided anything that feels like being a maker.

0:55.3

But that doesn't mean I didn't envy it at times.

0:58.9

I know many people, at all skill levels, who love making things with their hands.

1:04.6

But it wasn't the beautiful things they make that piqued my interest, although they're certainly

1:09.2

wonderful.

1:10.4

It was the process itself.

1:13.0

It was how they'd get in the zone while working. They'd lose track of time and of their daily

1:18.7

worries. Sometimes it seemed they'd even lose themselves. All their attention was so focused on what

1:25.0

they were doing. And what seemed like the best part was that

1:29.3

when they were done for the day, they seemed renewed, not burned out. And to someone like me,

1:35.9

who works hard but doesn't usually feel joy from it, that struck a chord. It made me wonder,

1:42.9

what is it about craft that makes this possible?
