Hello and welcome to the Nutrition Devapodcast. I'm your host, Monica Rinegal, and this week

0:10.6

we're talking about plant-based meats and whether they really are better for your health

0:15.8

or for the planet. The market for these plant-based meat alternatives is growing super fast, but

0:22.6

some people are questioning whether these highly processed foods really are a better choice

0:28.0

in terms of nutrition or the environment. And these days we're also curious about how

0:33.8

various foods and dietary patterns affect the microbiome, which in turn influences so many

0:39.9

aspects of our health, and there's some new research on that to share. But first, let me

0:45.2

clarify what type of foods we're talking about today. I'm not talking about cultured meat

0:52.1

products, which are actual meat but produced without animals. If you'd like to hear more

0:56.8

about that, check out my episode number 596 on lab-grown meats. I'm also not referring to

1:04.8

veggie burgers, bean burgers, and other products which aren't trying to mimic the flavor and the

1:11.1

texture of meat, or at least they're not trying very successfully. I'm talking about products that

1:17.2

are designed not just to stand in for meat, but to mimic it with increasing verisimilitude. For

1:24.4

example, impossible burger, beyond burger, and meatless farm all have products that look and cook

1:31.6

just like raw ground beef. They're often sold right next to the actual ground beef at the grocery

1:37.6

store, and they're packaged so similarly that if you weren't paying attention, you might easily

1:42.6

think that they were ground beef. Now these types of plant-based meat alternatives are not intended

1:48.5

for people who find the idea of eating meat disgusting. These are for people who really enjoy

1:55.2

eating meat, but feel like it might be better for their health or for the health of the planet,

2:00.2

not too. But would it? Let's take a closer look at how they stack up starting with the nutrition.

2:09.1

While old-school veggie burgers are often lower in fat and calories, these new plant-based

2:14.8

meat alternatives are formulated to be much closer to the nutrient profile of meat.
