Summary

Pastor J.D. shares five identities of a disciple—worshiper, family member, servant, steward, witness.

A glimpse inside this episode:

At our church, we’ve really made this a big emphasis this year. Jesus called us to make disciples, and that means teaching people how to follow Jesus and live the life of a Jesus follower.

We’ve been walking through 5 identities of a disciple:

  • Worshiper
    • Daily time with God. Quiet time.
    • Regular church attendance.
  • Servant
    • How do you approach your life, job, relationships, etc? What’s your attitude?
    • Volunteer/serve in church and/or community.
  • Family Member
    • Belonging in membership and community, specifically.
  • Steward
    • How do you treat your money? Is generosity part of your life?
  • Witness
    • Who’s your one?
    • Go on a mission trip.

0:31.6

Yeah.

0:36.2

This past weekend, we have over 300 that indicated first-time professions of faith.

0:36.9

That's unbelievable.

So the question that we ask ourselves, I feel like that a lot of churches ask us that when somebody comes to faith is,

0:43.1

you know, what's next? And so the question today is, J.D., what are the five absolutes of being

0:48.9

a disciple of Jesus? So why do you think there are five, Matt? What, what? Yeah. Why is that question there are five?

0:56.2

There have to be five. First of all, you just want to make it interesting. You know the five is like an

interesting number, but, but JD, I know you've been, I know you've been talking about this a lot

recently, so I figured I would set you up a little bit. So this question feels is going to be five, but what are they? Yes. Yeah, well, no, so we,

1:11.9

last couple years ago, we really kind of prayed through, studied the scriptures of what the

five essential identities of a disciple were. I don't want to say these are exhaustive, but these are

1:23.9

the ones that I think would provide really good categories for how to think of what it means to follow Jesus.

1:29.8

You know, when when Jesus says to us, just like he did to people 2,000 years ago, take up your cross and follow me.

1:35.7

He means absolute surrender. He means to accept the Great Commission.
