Summary
Are you raising athletes? Are you struggling with how to best support them? Are you thinking about how their faith impacts their sport - or informs their sport? We have two experts today on the podcast, Elisabeth and Sarah Hasselbeck - both are wives of former NFL players and moms of D1 athletes.Â
Listen to this episode with the entire family. Maybe sports is a place of disagreement in your family and this could open up some healthy dialogue with your spouse and children. Sarah and Elisabeth share such practical tips for you as you parent your athletes.
Don’t miss the end when both Sarah and Elisabeth share about the bigger picture of parenting. They take a moment to give heartfelt wisdom and encouragement for all parents (not just those with athletes)! I am so thankful for these two ladies and the legacy of faith their family is leaving in the sports community.Â
In this episode, we discuss:
- The Hasselbeck family and their history of sports and faithÂ
- Parental involvement in sportsÂ
- How to make faith the highest priority in your home
- How to help your athletes face setbacks and disappointmentsÂ
I have a feeling this will be one of your favorite episodes of the year.
Much love,
Courtney

| 0:03.5 | Greetings, Friends, Welcome to Pardon the Mess. I'm your host, Courtney Defeo, and we've got |
| 0:17.4 | quite the episode today. And it really could be one of those episodes. |
| 0:21.8 | It's like a warning flag for your family. |
| 0:23.6 | Even if you've got small kids or high school kids, the question is, how do we raise kids |
| 0:28.2 | where sports can be something they love and enjoy but not consume their entire identity |
| 0:33.9 | and being? |
| 0:34.9 | And I think if you've got God-given talents and athletes in your home, you're like, |
| 0:38.9 | how do I support them? How do I help them grow and reach their dreams? But in some levels, |
| 0:43.8 | and I'll just say this honestly, I've seen some parents in Texas, particularly because we're all |
| 0:49.0 | about sports here, that let that sport or that position or that win or that thing consume their entire lives. And so what is |
| 0:56.5 | the balance? And so since I have very little to offer in this area, I thought we'd get two |
| 1:00.8 | experts on, the hasslebacks. And again, I've got one of my kids as an athlete. She's a soccer player. |
| 1:06.4 | I just love to cheer her on in the stands and still have no clue what's happening with off sides. |
| 1:11.2 | I just love my cowbell. |
| 1:12.3 | And so I thought, I have nothing to offer this area. |
| 1:14.3 | But I do know two friends who are married to former NFL players and they've all got D1 athletes as moms and their families. |
| 1:21.2 | So they're super helpful. |
| 1:22.7 | But if you don't know who they are, the Hasselback family is, I call them a dynasty, but quite the family of sports. Don |
| 1:28.4 | Hasselbeck, the grandfather that they're going to mention, had three sons. He himself was a Super Bowl |
| 1:33.6 | champion and longtime NFL player, but he had three sons that all three played football, |
| 1:38.2 | and Matthew and Tim are married to Sarah and Elizabeth. Are you following the family treat? |
