Summary

Unbridled chaos OR creative disruption?

We consider both possibilities during a special live Coffee Talk broadcast on SmartHER News with an overview of the historic house vote that ousted the current speaker. We include: the background to what happened, why it matters and what to watch for next.

"The old days of pounding on the desk and giving people hell are gone. A man’s got to lead by persuasion and kindness and the best reason—that’s the only way he can lead people.” Longest-serving House Speaker Sam Rayburn LINK

As promised: A list of the Republicans who voted to oust Speaker McCarthy **plus every single present member of the Democrat Party**

Hi, everybody. Welcome to Smarter News. It is Wednesday, October 4th, just at 1030 central time.

0:11.0

And we are yet again experiencing history together. For the very first time in American history, we all wake up this morning with the House of Representatives not having a speaker due to the actions

0:23.1

of other members in the House of Representatives. We have seen the House of Representatives not

0:28.6

have a speaker at one time or the other throughout history for a variety of reasons,

0:33.6

resignations, for example, death at a time, but not in this particular way where the house

0:40.6

as a body votes to oust the current sitting speaker. And we find ourselves in a new area, uncharted

0:51.1

territory in many ways, and with an interesting problem with this story, which is that although we want to stay as closely as we can to the facts, there will be some conjecture that naturally is going to sneak in because we've never been here before.

1:10.5

And we don't know exactly what will happen. We have

1:12.7

some template of what could take place. But we don't entirely know what's next. We're going to talk

1:18.5

a little bit about that today. So the big headline you're going to hear everywhere, that the

1:22.5

house doesn't have a speaker, that this is the first time in history, that we've seen this done

1:27.3

by the House

1:28.5

itself. But here's what you're not going to see other places. And this is the guiding light

1:33.9

of smarter news, curiosity over commentary. As I've been listening to the media and the variety

1:40.9

of different reports that I too have relied upon to get the inside of what's

1:45.1

happening in the halls of Congress, there seems to be a word that keeps coming up repeatedly,

1:50.8

and that is chaos. This is chaos is happening. Chaos is being used by Republican critics,

1:57.1

former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, as well as Democrat critics of former speaker Kevin McCarthy,

2:03.6

there's this reiteration that this is a chaotic process, that this has happened. And that may be true,

2:10.8

but if we approach this story with curiosity over commentary, then we also have to equally entertain

2:17.0

that what some may view as chaos, we can also

2:21.9

view potentially as creative disruption. And creative disruption may lead to a variety of different
