Summary

Empty your lunch box! Wash your hands! No screens before homework! What non-negotiable rule do you enforce when the kids walk through the door after school gets out? In our latest “House Rules” episode, Meagan and Sarah tackle the time between when school-age kids get home and the onset of dinner and bedtime. We asked our community for rules, systems or routines that make the after-school time just a bit easier (having a rule can be pure magic because it takes the pressure off of mom!), as well as what small rituals help with reconnecting and decompressing after school. Hi, I'm Sarah and I'm Megan. We're two moms with eight kids between us from

0:05.2

little to grown. We're in different areas of the country and in different stages

0:09.0

of life, but we both know that motherhood's a lot easier when real moms share

0:12.7

tips and encouragement. And remind you that it's really all gonna be okay. We're

0:16.6

not experts. We're parents who've been there. We're not perfect. We're real.

Welcome to the mom hour. Hey everyone and welcome to episode 380 of the mom

0:26.4

hour. I am Sarah Powers here with Megan Francis. Hey Megan. Hey Sarah. Well, we

0:32.4

are doing a house rules episode today, which I'm really excited about. We're

0:36.5

doing house rules for after school. And I went back and looked and it feels like

0:42.2

we just took a little break from this house rules series, but we have not done

0:46.1

one since November of last year. So what? Right. Yes. I know. That doesn't seem

0:51.2

possible. Time is weird. We were doing them monthly in 2021 and the

0:56.4

basic idea is that we pull our community for their best little house rules around

1:02.4

a certain topic or parenting challenge. And a house rule really is kind of a

1:06.4

shorthand rule or system in your house that everybody can abide by and stick

1:12.0

to that kind of smooths the path or reduces some stress or strain or arguments

1:19.7

with kids. And so I don't know. I think these are so fun to hear what different

1:23.7

people are doing in their home. And the idea is not that you would then take

1:27.9

these and employ them all in your house. It's sort of like you get to hear how

1:31.0

other moms are doing things and then pick one or two that would fit for your

1:35.0

situation. I think it's really useful, especially if there's like a particular

1:39.8

pain point because you know, I'm not a huge rulemaker or a rule follower. But
