But a week ago, Met fans got capped with some of the worst news they've had in a long time.

On Tuesday, it was Edwin Diaz.

On Wednesday, it was Pete Alonzo.

On back-to-back days, two iconic Mets in their own ways left via free agency.

And I've been racking my brain for a couple of days because one of the most storied moments in Met History negatively is an event called the Midnight Massacre.

Now, the Midnight Massacre occurred before I was born, but it was at the trade deadline in 1977 where the New York Mets not only traded Dave Kingman, who was a popular slugger at the time,

but they also traded the franchise himself, George Thomas Seaver.

June 15th, 1977.

And it was nicknamed the Midnight Massacre because the trade deadline was at midnight back then.

Incredible.

So different world, I understand.

But that is a famous event in Met History, the Midnight Massacre, the night that Tom

Seaver and Dave Kingman were traded.

Now, I would argue just trying to be fair as a historian, but also as a Met fan, that while

trading Tom Seaver is the worst,

Dave Kingman was a big slugger, but he was no Pete Alonzo.

Right.

That for our generation, this is worse.

And it happened in a short period of time.

So the question I ask is, what are we calling this?

I mean, is it just, it doesn't get any name?

Or does it get a name like the Midnight
