Summary

The homeschooling movement is again in the crosshairs of the secular media, put there by a couple who was raised in the home of what appear to be hardcore, legalistic parents. No doubt there are sinners in the homeschooling movement, and some of those were even leaders. But do we shut down or overregulate an entire movement because of the sins of a small percentage? And if that's the case, find me a schooling situation that doesn't have any abusers in it and we'll talk.

Abuse is tragic regardless of the situation, and it should never be swept under the rug. That said, let's talk about what homeschooling really *is* to almost every homeschooling family and why I firmly believe it is the best option for all of our children. SHOW NOTES

And it's coming out again as it does every once in a while in the news. And we're going to talk

about it today as we see more articles coming out from the Washington Post and a show on Amazon

about shiny, happy people. Stick around. I think you're going to be encouraged.

0:42.4

Well, I'm glad you guys have joined me. I'm going to jump right into this day because it's a topic

0:46.0

that I think is needing to be addressed. And it's going to be obviously addressed all over the

0:51.0

inner webs and the Twitter verse and all the other places where people with grudges go to

0:55.6

unload them. There was someone just sent me the preview for a series that's coming out on the

1:03.3

Dougers and the bill gothard movement and Michael and Debbie Pearl. And I think the show's called

1:09.5

shiny, happy people. I watched the preview for it. The show I think comes out. I don't know,

1:16.4

it's tomorrow or something like that. And so I haven't watched the show, but I did watch the preview.

1:21.2

And I wanted to talk about it for a moment because I think it's important that we address the

1:26.5

elephant in the room and the elephant is this. There are and have been some really stupid teachings

1:33.6

that people have embraced over the years homeschooling or not homeschooling that have been tied to

1:39.0

homeschooling. And the bill gothard is one of them, the institute for basic youth principles.

1:44.9

I attended as a young girl with my family. They used to sell out the Coliseum in Portland, Oregon

1:51.9

and it was very much geared around the super authoritarian idea of what home should look like. And

1:59.4

I remember because I grew up that way. And my dad really liked that kind of teaching the

embrace did. Of course, I've told you before I grew up in a very unhappy home that was ruled by fear
