Nobody pulls off this kind of scare quite like Mike Flanagan.

In 2016, this writer director was on the up after a run of successful genre films such as

Oculus Weiger origin of evil and before I wake he began working on a secret project

with his partner K Siegel. This project was kept confidential

until its premiere at South by Southwest in 2016 and was then released exclusively for Netflix a month later.

This film was Hush, a home invasion horror

that used classic tropes from the genre dating all the way back

to the spiral staircase and wait until dark, whilst also feeling

akin to modern slasher movies. Hush marked the beginning of a seven-year-long relationship between Flanagan and Netflix, and his next film, Gerald's

game, was released direct to Netflix one year later. Based on a Stephen King novel, this

was another single location horror movie about a woman

alone in a house with a dangerous intruder lurking in the shadows. With this one-two hit of slick, tight domestic horror movies, Flanagan solidified his reputation as one of the most celebrated and innovative new

voices in the horror genre.
