Off the back of the success of John Carpenter's Halloween, there was a boom of teen horror movies

0:26.6

through the 1980s, many of which focused on a group of teenage girls being menaced in their home

0:33.0

by a deranged stranger. One of the most interesting of these teen splatter movies was The Slumber

0:42.1

Party Massacre, a film which, due to Roger Corman's producing, included much of the schlock and

0:49.0

male gaze that one might come to expect from this subgenre, but also being written and directed

0:55.1

by women, it was doing something smarter and more subversive that audiences might have initially

1:01.6

expected. Meanwhile, 10 years later in the early 90s, director Fred Walton decided to cash in on

1:12.6

the glut of teen horror movies that had dominated the previous decade by making a long-awaited sequel

1:19.5

to his 1979 classic When a Stranger Cools. This was a cheap made-for-TV sequel about a young girl

1:36.4

being stalked whilst babysitting, and it didn't appear to bring anything new or interesting to the

1:41.9

table, but with its returning cast members and Fred Walton's incredible control of pacing and

1:48.8

tension, it's since become considered among horror fans to be one of the most chilling and fun

1:54.6

horror sequels of the 1990s. Join me as we continue exploring the evolution of home

2:11.8

invasion, and we discuss the slumber party massacre and when a stranger calls back.

Welcome back to the evolution of horror. My name is Mike Munter, and as ever I am your host.

2:32.6

In this podcast, we explore and dissect the history and the evolution of the horror genre

2:37.7

one sub genre at a time. We are currently in the middle of our ninth season exploring the

2:43.2

evolution of home invasion movies, and this is part 13. This week, as that intro suggested,

2:50.7

it's a really fun pairing. We are going to be talking about 80s slasher classic, the slumber party

2:56.4

massacre, and early 90s, not so classic, when a stranger calls back. So joining me to discuss

3:04.7

these two brilliantly weird movies, I've got a brand new guest. You may recognise him as a

3:09.6

regular contributor on Stevie Webb's Brain Rock podcast, and it's a pleasure to finally get him
