abandoned prison with the same name. Holmesburg prison was built long after Eastern State

Penitentiary. It opened in 1896 and operated for almost 100 years until it was shut down in 1995.

Today the only functioning part of Holmesburg Prison is a renovated gymnasium that's most often used when other

local prisons are overcrowded. The city considered using this space to house

Besides prison overflow, Holmesburg is a favorite place for filmmaking.
