Tracy, today we're going to go back to a very important date in history.

April 26th, 1986.

Do you have any idea what happened on that day?

Uh... on that day? Uh, no.

This was the day of the worst nuclear disaster in history of the world.

Oh my gosh, well you think I would remember that.

The Chernobyl nuclear plant explosion.

All right, so the Chernobyl plant was near a place called Pripyat, which is close to what is now

Ukraine.

Mm-hmm.

You said it like you knew.

I did. I knew it.

It suffered a core explosion and a partial meltdown on that day.

Now as a result, radioactive material was released into the environment.

Oh gosh.

Experts estimate that up to 50 people died during the initial explosion. But many more suffered radiation burns and other health

ramifications. Many others obviously died later because of the effects of the radioactivity.
