Today is Thursday, August 7th. Let's talk about some news.

Starting with an update from Monday's episode. So in Monday's episode, we talked about the redistricting

fight in Texas. And since then, it's sort of escalated to a national level with states like

New York, Illinois, California, Florida, all jumping into

the ring. So the first part of this discussion will basically be a recap from last episode,

and then we'll get into how these other states are getting involved. As we've talked about last

week, Texas Republican lawmakers released their first draft of a new

congressional map, which proposed changing district lines in a way that would result in five

Democratic seats flipping to Republican seats for next year's midterm elections. And as we talked about

on Monday, this is a process called

gerrymandering. So partisan gerrymandering is legal so long as it doesn't violate federal law,

meaning whichever party has the majority in a state's legislature can redraw the district lines

in a way that favors their political party, but they can't dilute

a minority vote in doing so or draw lines based on race. That would violate federal law.
