Summary

*This is part 2 of Helen Zaltzman's episode. Though you are free to listen in whichever order you so desire we really do recommend listening to part 1 first or things might be slightly confusing*

"Podcast". Now that's a word we've never heard in the Correct Realm. We're told it's some sort of audible murmuration in which people are able to share their thoughts and feelings directly into your ears. It sounds mad, and to be honest it doesn’t sound true. However, we’re led to believe that this week’s guest is a pioneer in the world of podcasting, so we’ll suspend our belief as she walks through our doors. It’s broadcaster, writer and podcaster Helen Zaltzman.

Helen was one of the very early adopters of podcasting, and will be looked back on as one of the key players in its infancy. She still podcasts, and her wonderful series ‘The Allusionist’ is well worth a listen if you’re a fan of all things language. You may also notice that she’s the second Zaltzman to enter The Moon Under Water, but we’re almost certain that Helen’s pub will be less bizarre than Andy’s.

I'm Welcome back to part two of the moon underwater, soundtracked by the opening of a Guinness

0:34.6

Nort Point Nort, which is fitting for the pub we're creating this

0:39.2

evening with Helen Zaltzman, podcast and writer extraordinaire. But you're not a podcast, sorry.

0:46.6

Podcaster. Do people just think you're actually a podcast? Yeah, just a corporeal

0:53.2

distillation of podcast. Why not? It's hard to tell the

0:56.6

difference these days. And fitting that one of Helen's podcasts is about etymology. I've got to be

1:03.1

careful not to confuse that with entomology, which is insects, I think, which is something that

1:08.4

both an etymologist and an entomologist would know.

1:11.3

But before we head back into Helen's dream pub, we must resolve the matter of the Moon

1:16.1

Underwater Pub Quays Robin.

1:17.5

Thanks, John.

1:18.3

Yes, so it was a question all about words derived from the ancient Greek.

1:21.8

Question one, what word was coined by Sir Thomas Moore in 1516 from the ancient Greek for

1:27.4

no place.

1:28.5

Helen, what are you saying for that?

1:30.3

I was thinking about utopias, but that's not what utopia means.

1:36.6

So now I'm trying to break it down.

1:39.1

My ancient Greek is so rusty.

1:40.9

My GCSE was in 1995.

1:43.5

So go on, put me out of this mild misery. Well, John, what are you

1:50.2

saying? No, I think Helen's right. I think it is Utopia. Yeah. So I've got Utopia, but, so I'm going to

1:55.5

give you both a point, but why do you think that isn't the right answer? I just don't have much
