This week on forward.

Here we are, we have a new virus, we don't know what causes it, we don't know much about it, we don't know how to treat it, we don't even really know how to diagnose it.

We don't have any of those problems when we talk

about schizophrenia, depression, bipolar illness, we know how to diagnose these illnesses and we know

how to treat them? It's the execution, how do you get the things that people need to them when they need it in the right way?

I think the reason we do is we confuse illness and identity.

And it's an easy mistake to make because I write it out in the book.

You know, these are people who have made that

mistake for themselves. They may think that schizophrenia is who they are. And what we're doing

here when we allow someone to stay under the bridge is we're listening to their illness and not paying

attention to their identity. I am thrilled to have joining me on the podcast today the former director of the

National Institute of Mental Health, the former Mental Health
