bitterness, it had simply been modeled. His parents were pragmatic people, thoughtful, educated,

the kind who questioned stories instead of inheriting them whole. Even the family history

he'd grown up hearing, half Dutch, half Indonesian, layered with war and displacement, had always been framed as stories, not truths, cultural echoes, folklore meant to be remembered, not relied upon.

There was one story, though, that never quite settled into the background.

It predated him by decades and was always

told carefully, as if the act of retelling carried weight. His great-grandmother during the Second

World War had gone to a woman known for dealing in things people didn't talk about openly,

not a healer, not a priest, something less defined. The request, according to family

lore, had been simple, protection, health, survival. The price had been anything but. Two guardians,

the story went in exchange for a sacrifice. The next day her infant son died, an accident so small it bordered on

absurd. A bamboo splinter. Infection. Gone. After that, the family survived the war.

Internment, disease, scarcity. They endured where others didn't. When the story was told,

it was always followed by a shrug,

a pause, a reminder that people clung to meaning during chaos. That survival rewrote memory.
