But I learned from Peter Berkowitz of the Hoover Institution writing recently at

Real Clear Politics that all the trouble in academia is not necessarily in the

President's office or the D.E. I. It's also in the departments and what has come of

those departments since I was a student in the mid-20th century.

Peter, a very good evening to you.

Your essay points out to me something that I was noticing but not taking all that seriously, which is

studies, the word studies.

Yes.

It seems to have proliferated in the last 50 years. What does it achieve? Good evening to you, Peter. Good

evening, John. Yes, it's a strange, strange development in the, especially in the

1980s, 1990s, maybe a little bit earlier,

especially women and especially African Americans decided that women and African Americans were not a sufficient object

of scholarly attention at our universities.

One way to have handled that

would have been to demand that political scientists pay more attention to women into the history of women, the politics of women, the history of

African marriage politics, African Americans, and so on.

The economics department pay more attention.

The history department pay more attention.

But the universities went to different direction.

Instead, they created special programs. They called them studies programs.
