Summary

How significant is Harry Giles' string of knee surgeries? Will his lack of health prevent Duke from reaching its goals? Is there still any chance of the five-star freshman becoming the No. 1 overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft? CBS Sports' Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander discuss that at the top of this episode of the Eye on College Basketball podcast. Then they talk about the NCAA's baffling decision to rule Isaiah Brock, a decorated war hero, ineligible at Oakland. And they close on John Calipari's idea to have "August Basketball." Hey there, it's Gary Parrish. It's Thursday October 6th and this is of course the Ion College

0:12.4

basketball park as I got met. Noil I know with me and we're only about a month away from

0:16.6

the start of the season now and we now know Duke's Harry Giles is not going to be in uniform

0:20.6

when it begins or at least we know he won't be playing when it begins. That's the big news

0:25.1

from this week a third knee surgery since 2013 he's torn both ACLs. He had been rehabbing

0:31.2

that one since last November the latest ACL injury and now had to have out the Scopic

0:36.5

surgery that's going to keep him sideline in additional six weeks at least. Noil, and

0:42.9

you spent some time with Harry Giles over the years. How big of a setback is this for

0:47.3

the player who some projected to be the top pick in the 2017 NBA draft?

0:54.2

I think this is notable. Now listen, it is a knee scope. It's not major surgery. It's

0:59.2

basically outpatient surgery. This is the kind of thing that athletes on the regular

1:04.0

get at the pro level. But the fact of the matter is Harry Giles has needed surgical procedures

1:11.5

on his knees three times over the course of basically two and a half years. He is a big

1:16.3

man. And to me, listen, I actually love his game. He was my favorite prospect in his

1:22.7

class and I wrote a huge feature on him last year prior to his second major knee injury.

1:29.0

And at that point, after I wrote the feature and had watched him, to me, he was unequivocally

1:32.8

the top player in the class. The guy who I would take number one. Now because of all of

1:36.9

this, I would say it's borderline irresponsible for any GM to say that he would take Giles

1:43.1

number one simply because he's a big man. We look at what's at now. I know it's different

1:47.4

injuries, but Joel and Beat is only finally getting on the floor for the sixers. Obviously,

1:52.6

we look at Greg Odin who had such a terrific one and done year with Ohio State. His career

1:57.6

completely collapsed because of injuries over the years. There are so many examples over
