It's a thrill to talk to the director of bodies, bodies, bodies, and the writer and director

of the new film, Baby Girl.

It's writer-director Helena Ryan is sitting across from me.

And we were talking before we got started that both of these films are really about

theater and theater games.

And there's a kind of a level of discomfort in movies that you get when you see people touching each other in ways that aren't

transactional. And both these movies are kind of built on that kind of eerieness that happens

when people are touching each other and getting too close to each other and violating each other's

personal space by having their faces get too close.

Yes.

That happens a lot in these films, doesn't it?

Yeah, I think this is kind of the, for me, all this old stories, but the stories I want to tell are always about what part of me is civilized and what part of me is animalistic.

And I'm very interested in that. Like we're sitting here, like, in our little chairs with our microphones.

But at the same time, why don't we just crawl around and shout and do and follow all the

impulses that we have?

Because we have this layer of enlightenment and rationality to it.

But underneath it all, we have this animalistic side to us too.
