This is CVSI and the world. I'm John Bachelor. Haiti. The Troubled Land of

Haiti. I meet Haiti for the first time three years ago reporting on the

Darien gap with my colleagues because at that time Haitians coming through the

Darien gap overwhelmed everyone but Cubans perhaps but that was now and again clearly Haitian families were

Arriving at the Darien gap headed to America. They were not necessarily coming from Haiti. They'd been living for years as servants or helpmates in Chile and in Brazil.

Haiti's been evacuating a population for some years, maybe decades.

The way I understood they did it was that they crossed into the Dominican Republic

take a flight to Guyana or someplace where their visa was not necessary, travel to Brazil, find jobs, but then

when the Darien gap opened up according to rumor, they headed for the United States

and are now listening to me in New Jersey all happy however back home in Haiti

like a Hollywood movie, a Mad Max. At the center of this, however, are personalities and organizations called gangs that are critical to understand why this most

recent turmoil refusing to permit the Prime Minister who was appointed a 74-year-old physician, I believe, not elected, to return

to the island saying he must resign, saying everybody must resign, a prison break,

marauders in the streets, evacuation of American personnel

obliged by the State Department, Marines going in to guard the embassy, other

embassies evacuating. This latest version is dominated by one man. other embassies street. It's not because he barbecues people. His name is Cherisier, French pronunciation. But there's much

more to it. There are other gangs and there's something called an alliance. These gangs are they running

Port of Prince or they running the island or are they in charge good evening to you

Allison. Good evening if there's anyone in charge in Haiti, it would be the gangs. We've

seen estimates reported that up to 80% of the capital's territory is controlled by gangs.
