Today's guest is weirdly hard for me to introduce, because she's my mom, live-danner.

You might know her from the stage, she won a Tony before I was born at age 26 for her turn

in butterflies or free, or you might think of her as Dina Burns from Meet the Parents.

More recently, she starred in a couple of films by Brett Haley. She was utterly phenomenal

and I'll see you in my dreams. And the next, heart's beat loud comes out this summer.

Growing up, I saw her both as my mom and as an actress, and I was always curious about who

she was on the stage as opposed to off the stage. Well, it can be hard to get her to

open up, she really did in our conversation today.

I wish I had enjoyed it more. I sort of felt I didn't hate to say it, because it sounds

sort of, but I assure you it's true, I felt I didn't deserve it.

In advance of Mother's Day, we sat down and talked about the impact she's had on me

and vice versa, as well as how her parents and later my dad shaped her life and career.

He was my big savior, you know, I met him and immediately just, womp, just felt. This

is the only person and I adored my father and my brothers, but the first person who I

felt was completely comfortable in his own skin. I don't think I had ever experienced

quite that.
