0:51.0	Well, our topic today is a new edition of The Privileged Planet, which contains responses
0:56.0	to critics, lots of updated facts, some new arguments, and completely rewritten and improved
1:01.7	text. But before we get to that, I thought we could just
1:04.8	set the stage and remind listeners how the privileged planet originally came to be and what
1:09.8	you set out to do with the book. So what was the impetus for writing this book? Did it come out of
1:15.2	things you were researching at the time? Yes, and in fact I can trace it back to one particular
1:22.1	event.
1:22.9	It was my trip to India in 1995, which I timed to coincide
1:29.7	with a total eclipse of the sun visible from northern India and I observed it and after I returned I
1:36.8	thought about it and I realized well that's that's quite an exceptional thing these total eclipses that we can view from the Earth.
1:46.0	And so I started thinking about it as I, and I started putting together a research paper,
1:52.0	which was eventually published in 1999,
