And actually, we were a byword for social commentators, not just in England, but in Europe as well,

who said, you know, the British labourer is the

poorest labourer in Europe, because they have no land. And allotments were seen as one of many

ways to try and solve this problem. That was the voice of garden historian Twigs Way.

In that episode Twigs detailed how the rise of allotments was tied to the enclosure movement.

At first it was all about renting plots to labourers to improve their economic prospects after land became privatised.

And in this context, growing your own was seen as a key way to save money.

It's a great contrast to the way gardening had become a somewhat ostentatious way to show off how rich you were.
