Welcome back to Growing Greener, the podcast that digs deep into key environmental topics to ask what small steps we can take in our gardens to help make big changes to secure a sustainable future for all of us.

Wildlife in the UK is in a frightening decline,

especially in cities,

and the RSPB reports bird numbers and species variety are falling sharply.

A 2021 report from the RSPB,

using data compiled by the Natural History Museum, listed the UK as the least effective G7 member of Protecting Nature, the worst country in the G7 for the amount of wildlife and wild space is lost due to human activity.

Globally, the UK was ranked 12th worst of 240 countries and territories.

The UK was third from the bottom across all European countries ahead of only Ireland and

Malta. The report stated that nature in the UK is in a perilous state and that the UK now only retains half of its plants and

animals. Kate Brebbery is a wildlife gardener, writer, and a voice that will be familiar to many

Gardner's World magazine podcast listeners. She joins me today to discuss how and why gardeners can play

a vital role helping reverse this decline in wildlife.
