Queens of the tea on history. Queens of the World Grainya Nimali, Grace O'Malley, Irish Pirate Queen

Grainia Nimali, known as Grace O'Malley in English,

was raised aboard her father's ship. Her charisma then won

her the loyalty of her husband's men. Together they traded and marauded the rough west coast

of Ireland. She feuded with other clans until the English came to take over the nation. Grania and her English

nemesis nearly destroyed each other until she went over his head and met directly with

Queen Elizabeth I to get a royally sanctioned piracy license. Grania was born around 1530 on Clare Island.

Her name was Gronya Nii Mali.

In Irish mythology, Gronya is a princess who elopes with a young lover to escape being married to an older man. In the Gaelic language,

Nii before a clan name indicates daughter of, while O indicates grandson of. The anglicized

version of her name, Grace O'Malley, was not used until years after her death, so we will call her Grania.
